Welcome to The Floyd Street Tribune
All things Louisville men's basketball in one swashbuckling newsletter.
Late in 2019, I stepped back from my work reporting and writing about Louisville men’s basketball to embark on the journey of a lifetime. My wife, Elizabeth, and I left for Europe in early October that year. The plan: Spend the year visiting as many countries, restaurants and sites as possible while I write about European sports for an American audience. When we returned to the States in fall 2020, I’d come back to my life as a college basketball writer.
The best-laid schemes of mice and men yadda, yadda, yadda.
The last year has been trying for all of us in so many different ways. Elizabeth and I left Belgrade, Serbia, in early March for what we hoped would be a short break back home — see our dog, go to a wedding, visit our families and friends — before continuing on to Greece and, eventually, among other things, covering UEFA Euro 2020, a dream assignment for a sports nerd like me.
We’ve been in Louisville since, and we again call this wonderful place home. Which brings me to why you and I are here.
I’m thrilled at the early success of my new podcast, Floyd Street’s Finest. (Are you picking up a Floyd Street theme here?) But I also miss writing about college basketball. When my mom went into labor with me, she delayed going to the hospital so she and my dad could finish watching their beloved Boston Celtics fend off Michael Jordan amid his famous 63-point playoff performance. Basketball is in my blood. Even in Europe, when we were six hours ahead, I found myself watching big games while huddled in bed, shielding my phone with a pillow well into the early-morning hours so the brightness wouldn’t disturb my sleeping wife.
Now that I’ve returned to Louisville, I’m getting back to the things I do best. I covered the Cardinals for six years for the Courier-Journal and The Athletic. I’ve spent hours talking about them on just about every possible platform. With this newsletter, I will once again offer up my insights and observations to a fan base that has so warmly welcomed me over the past seven years.
So, I invite you to subscribe to the The Floyd Street Tribune newsletter. I know there’s a boatload of media out there, but if you’ve followed my work over the years, you know I bring something different to the table, something you won’t get elsewhere. A fresh, wide-ranging newsletter will hit your inbox every Thursday morning, and you can open it at your leisure and enjoy for just $7 a month or $75 for the entire year.

Why subscribe?
I’ve been a leading voice covering Louisville men’s basketball since 2013. I’d like to think you’re here because you know me and I know you and we like each other. You know what I bring to the table. (And if you don’t know me: Hey! Thanks for giving me a shot.)
Here’s what you can expect to see here:
nuanced, in-depth analyses (like explaining why Chris Mack values baseline out-of-bounds situations or how Mack’s hybrid pack line is supposed to work) that break down what you’re watching and why things happen the way they do
some detail-packed features that give a fuller picture of the team and program you follow — like when I visited the all-girls Cincinnati high school where Chris Mack got his coaching start; or the time I walked Freedom Hall with Denny Crum and just asked him to let his mind wander; or the oral history of Donovan Mitchell’s time at U of L; or the story behind the three men who integrated U of L hoops; or who came up with throwing your Ls up?; or an obituary of the man inside the Cardinal Bird costume who flew from the Freedom Hall rafters
some wonky items, too — I will get into the nitty-gritty of Louisville’s NCAA Tournament resume, as I have in previous seasons, so you can have a much clearer idea of where the Cardinals stand week-by-week and not just rely on Bracketology and uninformed takes
How much does it cost?
It’s $7 a month or $75 for the year. Like a great meal prepared by an experienced chef, the work produced here will be high quality and worth the cost to consume.

And, like I said, tell your family and friends! And have them tell their family and friends.
Why pay?
This I believe: Products that bring value to your life — art, books, beer, bourbon, food, movies, Netflix, video games, etc. — take thought and time to create and curate. Appreciation of, and respect for, that effort is, well, appreciated. Think of the monthly fee ($7) as two cups of coffee, or seven depending on where you get your caffeine boost. And just like coffee, I intend to brighten your mornings.
Please subscribe! I sincerely appreciate it.
